Launch of the GFMD 2017-2018 Co-Chairmanship

The Governments of Germany and Morocco will co-chair the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) for a period of two years, beginning 1 January 2017 until 31 December 2018.

This will be the first co-chairmanship since the inception of the Global Forum in 2007, taking place in the wake of the New York Declaration that calls for the development of a Global Compact on Migration, and less than two years since the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development with clear migration-related goals.

The joint Chairmanship by Germany and Morocco aims, inter alia, to link two regions, Africa and Europe, located on both ends of the Mediterranean Sea, at a time when migration issues are on top of the political agenda in large parts of the world.

A brief launching event will be held at the UN Headquarters, Conference Room 11, on 19 December 2016, at the margins of the International Migrants Day.

As indicated in the Provisional Agenda, the event will highlight the objectives of the GFMD 2017-2018 Co-Chairmanship, which will mark the 10th Global Forum and coincide with important global processes on migration, including the development of the Global Migration Compact and the Third High Level Dialogue on International Migration. The occasion will also feature the outcomes of the Ninth GFMD Summit to be held in Dhaka on 10-12 December.
